Mindless Morning Babble

On August 12, 2009, in Misc., by Kerry

Because I believe in the efficiency of a free market, I assume that radio broadcast companies know what they’re doing, and that there must be some characteristic of the human nature that wants to hear other people babble on the radio in the morning. As long as I live I shall probably never understand it, but why else would morning radio be so consumed with half-witted conversation that is largely absent from the programming schedule throughout the rest of the day? Perhaps it is some vestigial throwback to a common ancestor we shared with birds (who seem to also enjoy a good mindless babble in the morning.) I hope it’s not a very adaptive trait as it seems to have been omitted, or at the very least masked, in my genome pair.

Dog Food

On August 10, 2009, in Misc., by Kerry

I keep seeing these commercials advertising dog food that gives your canines boundless energy. They showcase dogs running, bouncing, and dragging their owners over the ground. Wouldn’t it be easier to sell dog food that makes your pets lethargic and listless? Perhaps I’m biased.

Wolfram Alpha

On August 9, 2009, in The Web, by Kerry

Been having a lot of fun playing with Stephen Wolfram’s new Wolfram Alpha. Stephen is a hero of mine, largely for discovering the cellular automaton Rule 30. His latest site is a resource for anyone needing something broken down into math. And at last, I have a solution for factorials about 170! I disagree with those that say this site is going to be as important as Google, just for the fact that it plays no role in the three economic engines of the internet, namely dating, downloading pornography, and sharing copywritten music. However, I did find a use for it just yesterday.

Portland Trip – The Original

On August 2, 2009, in Misc., by Kerry

So, we’ve had a wonderful time in one of my favorite cities in the world. Weather was a little warm, but something that should be expected in August. Often, when planning to head back to Bend after a weekend in Portland, I scour the web looking for an interesting place to have brunch or lunch. Today, I ran across this little gem. The Original. An eclectic, strange, and wonderful selection of some of the most unique cuisine I have seen in recent history. Take a look at their All Day Menu and pay special attention to the Duck Liver in Funyuns. Any restaurant that takes Funyuns seriously is OK in my book. I haven’t quite decided what I will order there today, but I’m certainly leaning toward the cheddar cheese burger served on a glazed donut. That’s just the kind of thing that I can imagine would be delicious, however, I can only imagine the faces if I tried to serve it to guests in my home.
