John Grey’s

After over a week in the Yucatan, immersing ourselves in Mexican and Mayan culture and cuisine, last night we had a very different dining experience. Upon a recomendation we strolled into John Grey’s, a small bistro on Calle Corazon in Playa del Carmen. If you know Playa del Carmen, and more specifically Avenida Quinta, then you’ll recognize the small spur of a street called Calle Corazon. In John Grey’s we were met with very, and uniquely, professional staff, soft jazz music and a menu of choices with both American and French influences.
I must say, although I come to an area to truly experience the local flavors, cultures, and cuisine..after 10 days it was truly delightful to be surrounded by something that felt more familiar (without enduring 7 hours on a plane). The encrusted pork loin in roquefort cream and potatoes was out of this world. They pulled off a flawless Manhattan, and the selection of dessert options did not disappoint. It was hard to believe that stepping out those front doors would deliver us back into the bustle of a busy Mexican marketplace.
If you’re ever down this way, John Grey’s is a must. But keep it to the end of your trip. You’ll appreciate it that much more.
I’d give you a link to their website, but a quick Google search did not return one.
