In an effort to simplify my life, I’m attempting to simplify my software. My new home office pc is a pretty beefy Alienware gaming platform with some serious hardware. And to keep that hardware humming, and not continually slowing down with every passing day, I have tried to be extremely careful about what I install on the machine. In the past, I’ve been such a sucker for any shiny new piece of software that I would often have to wait several minutes for my add/remove programs dialog to load as it was too busy listing all of the various pieces of junk I had loaded. But this is a new leaf, and I’m going to try to stick to it. That’s why when I found the need for an FTP client to load files up to our web server, I was reluctant to install a complete stand alone program. That’s when I found FireFTP for Firefox. Here is a plug-in for the FireFox browser that gives you a simple, but able, FTP platform. Now, I must admit that it is not nearly as fast as my old standby, BlazeFTP, but at least it’s been updated in the last 5 years (the Blaze download site still advertises breaking news from 2003), and it gives me the sense that my pc remains just that much “cleaner.”
