Prefab housing….
I’m sure I’ve upset some architects with that last comment, but I personally feel that there is so much emotion between architects and structures that there is a necessary next step on the way to market. One of the quotes I caught in the issue of Dwell, “light being the…spiritual food that separates architecture from mere building.” Wha? Only an architect or a marketer could say something like that.
Another great article in this issue features a second home contracted by a Seattle attorney for his mountain hideaway. His original idea was to create a prefab structure as a low cost alternative to traditional building. He got a fantastic house out of the project, but didn’t hit his savings goals.
“We were hoping to get this place built for $150,000 to $200,000.” Stafne says. “But that just didn’t happen. It came out to be much more. There are still so many unknowns and unforeseen difficulties that can occur.”
With land prices steadily increasing and America’s debt load a constant worry, I would just like to see some affordable housing choices other than highly depreciating mobile homes. I think we’ll get there. We just need to take these ideas through the next stage.
