Biodiesel
Is biodiesel the answer to our fossil fuel woes. Rising gas prices have some saying “yes.”
OK. So it’s not quite as cool as running your vehicle on hydrogen or electricity, but as a non-fossil fuel alternative, biodiesel is not bad. And I especially like the fact it pairs environmentalists with diesel vehicles.
I was first interested in biodiesel when I ran across a backfile to a website under construction by The Big Farm in Portland, OR. The site was for the Ecologic Fuel Company and it was nicely styled. It sounded like they could be an interesting investment opportunity, but now I can’t find any reference to the company on the web. As anyone who has made recent investments in oil stocks, I’ve made good returns. However, as oil prices continue to rise, the market has to be looking hard for alternatives. I site the recent sales in hybrid autos as an example.
The problem is that companies trying to figure out hydrogen fuel sources and the like have not yet hit stable profitability.Biodiesel may be the simple step that we can all wrap out minds around. I mean using modified vegetable oil for diesel fuel is not rocket science. In fact you can make the stuff in your own kitchen.Of course you have to set up your mini lab and be prepared for a raid from the local meth lab task force. But once you explain that you’re a budding fuel mogul, they should leave you alone.
Now, in my hometown, biodiesel at the pumps is still far more expensive than fossil diesel, but i hear it’s the cheaper alternative in Europe. I assume that if we can increase demand in the states, our prices will drop as well. I have a friend that has given it a try. He states that it works fine. When his wife starts the car in the garage, it makes the place smell like McDonald’s. That’s an added feature. When I start my diesel pick-up on a cold morning, none of my neighbors are thinking “McDonald’s,” and birds are dropping from the sky. Well, it’s something to think about. If I find a company I can like, I’ll invest.

I’ve recently taken up the same topic on my blog and a good bunch of people to talk to are the people at Piedmont Biofuels. I’m sure they could give you a list of companies. Heck, you might even like Piedmont so much you’ll invest in them!
Piedmont’s website is: http://www.biofuels.coop/
Thanks, Jesse. They do have a really informative site.
